Subseries 1, General Information, 1971-1986, consists of the Association's articles of incorporation and by-laws, historical sketches, annual reports, clippings, newsletters, and oversize items relating to the history and programs of the organization. Subseries 2 consists of minutes and correspondence of members of the board of directors including Candelario Lamboy, Carlos J. Morales, and John Matrullo, 1970-87. Subseries 3 includes correspondence, grant proposals, reports, and miscellaneous personal papers of SMA executive directors Pablo S. Velazquez, César R. Miranda, Nelson A. Diaz, Guillermo Salas, Jr., Gualberto Medina, Louis E. Pasamanick, and Nathaniel Brodo, 1971-88. Subseries 4, Office Files, 1972-88, documents daily operations of the association. Included are correspondence and reports received from other Latino organizations in Philadelphia and elsewhere, 1972-86, arranged alphabetically by name of organization. Among those represented are the Association for Promoting Minority Enterprises, Congreso de Latinos Unidos, Inc., Latin American Manufacturers Association, National Puerto Rican Forum, the Puerto Rican Development Corporation, and the Philadelphia Urban Coalition, an organization focusing on economic advancement of African Americans in the city, pertaining to program collaborations between PUC and SMA from 1975-82. Subseries 4 also includes development information, membership and mailing lists, and personnel files. Subseries 5 contains financial records, 1971-87.

The Spanish Merchants Company was established by the Spanish Merchants Association of Philadelphia to distribute milk to Spanish-speaking grocers.
